RICK

OWENS

Richard Saturnino Owens has been creating clothes for those who prefer the dark side of fashion since 1994. Rick Owens took as a basis a purely American phenomenon — the culture of grunge
RICK OWENS WAS BORN
ON NOVEMBER
Rick Owens was born on November 18, 1962 in a conservative Catholic family. After school, he went to Los Angeles, where he enrolled in the Otis College of Art and Design — but seeing high tuition costs and no prospects for real work, Owens dropped out after two years.

CUTTING AND SEWING
COURSES IN LOS
ANGELES
In an effort to get closer to practice, Rick Owens enrolled in a two-year course of cutting and sewing at the Los Angeles College of Commerce and Technology. In an interview, he recalls this time like this:
“I learned to make patterns with different Korean girls — no glamour. I didn’t grow up in the industry like Marc Jacobs at Halston. After that, I worked for local brands for years, redrawing the things of famous designers.”

GETTING TO KNOW
MICHELLE LAMY
AND YOUR BRAND
Michelle Lamy is a business partner and life partner of Rick Owens for more than twenty years. They met when Rick was looking for a job as a fashion designer, and Michelle had a sportswear company.

As Rick himself admitted, the first two years of working together Michelle was even difficult to understand because of the strong French accent, but then something clicked and a relationship began, without which he can no longer imagine his life.
RICK OWENS CREATED
A NEW STYLE
Glunge
Making leather jackets with excessively long sleeves, asymmetrical skirts and elongated tight T-shirts in dark dirty shades, Owens has formed his own style, — a mixture of glamour and grunge

OWN FASHION
Rick sold designs exclusively at the Charles Gallay concept store in Los Angeles. His gloomy look and long black hair complemented the image of a punk of the fashion industry. In 2001, Owens joined Eco Bocci Associati to develop
his company internationally and moved Owenscorp production to Italy. In the same year, Kate Moss appeared in a Rick Owens leather jacket.

COLLABORATION
Anna Winter was very impressed by Rick's phenomenon and agreed with the American edition of Vogue to sponsor his first show at New York Fashion Week as part of the Spring/Summer 2002 season. Owens himself recalls the period of working with Vogue as follows:
“I was aware of what was going on around, but I didn’t know about magazines. I didn’t know the whole world. I knew which stores suited me and where I would like to see my things, but it seemed to me that I was in a different niche of this business. It was strange, because it would be stupid to refuse such a thing, but my aesthetics are so narrowly focused, so ugly, so specific, so gray.”

OWENS STARTED MAKING
FURNITURE IN THE 2005
FIRST FOR YOURSELF
THEN TO ORDER
Rick Owens has been producing furniture since 2005. The two-ton marble boy does not pretend to comfort or special significance, it is just an interior item that does not fit into the traditional comfort framework. Among the main sources of inspiration, Owens lists the French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens and the modernist Marcel Breuer.
In 2017, the famous Rizzoli publishing house published the book , which became a catalog of the most outstanding works of Rick Owens in the field of furniture.
There has never been excessive conceptuality in Owens' work — even the Fall/Winter 2015 show, where male models walked with their genitals exposed, he called “a simple, primitive gesture.” The same goes for the furniture that Rick Owens has been producing since 2005. A two-ton marble bed does not pretend to comfort or special meaning, it is just an interior item that does not fit into the traditional framework of comfort.

RICK OWENS ALWAYS
PRESENTS THE HOUSE
AS A CAVE
Rick says that he always imagined a house as a cave, and a person as a strong but timid creature seeking confidence and protection in its depths by the hearth. In his furniture, he uses only high-quality and rare materials.
MICHELLE LAMY HELPS
GET RARE MATERIALS
FOR RICK
His clothes are massive, brutal and at the same time stunningly tactile, textured. The designer says that Michelle is engaged in the selection of materials. She stands behind the best Italian marble, behind rock crystal from Pakistan, cashmere and alabaster, bronze of perfect workmanship — in short, for everything that concerns not only clothes.

LIMITED
Owens' items come out in limited editions and are sold in galleries selling collectible designs. He creates unique items for Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
EDITION
The Glade collection, which was born in 2019 and released by the darkness of his wife Michelle, is absolutely in the spirit of Owens: spectacular chairs and curbstones of unusual “cut” made of expensive materials and huge silver crowns as the main interior accessory.
RICK OWENS NOW
Now Rick Owens' collections are sold all over the world, his clothes are in demand in Paris, London and Moscow. In real life, Rick Owens is a modest man, but he is definitely happy with his life
“I was lucky because I was in the right place with the right people at the right time… I really love what I do.”
