Rick Owens was born on November 18, 1962 in a conservative Catholic family. After school, he went to Los Angeles, where he enrolled in the Otis College of Art and Design — but seeing high tuition costs and no prospects for real work, Owens dropped out after two years.

In an effort to get closer to practice, Rick Owens enrolled in a two-year course of cutting and sewing at the Los Angeles College of Commerce and Technology. In an interview, he recalls this time like this:

“I learned to make patterns with different Korean girls — no glamour. I didn’t grow up in the industry like Marc Jacobs at Halston. After that, I worked for local brands for years, redrawing the things of famous designers.”

Michelle Lamy is a business partner and life partner of Rick Owens for more than twenty years. They met when Rick was looking for a job as a fashion designer, and Michelle had a sportswear company.

COLLABORATION

Anna Winter was very impressed by Rick's phenomenon and agreed with the American edition of Vogue to sponsor his first show at New York Fashion Week as part of the Spring/Summer 2002 season. Owens himself recalls the period of working with Vogue as follows:

“I was aware of what was going on around, but I didn’t know about magazines. I didn’t know the whole world. I knew which stores suited me and where I would like to see my things, but it seemed to me that I was in a different niche of this business. It was strange, because it would be stupid to refuse such a thing, but my aesthetics are so narrowly focused, so ugly, so specific, so gray.”

Rick Owens has been producing furniture since 2005. The two-ton marble boy does not pretend to comfort or special significance, it is just an interior item that does not fit into the traditional comfort framework. Among the main sources of inspiration, Owens lists the French architect Robert Mallet-Stevens and the modernist Marcel Breuer.

In 2017, the famous Rizzoli publishing house published the book , which became a catalog of the most outstanding works of Rick Owens in the field of furniture.

There has never been excessive conceptuality in Owens' work — even the Fall/Winter 2015 show, where male models walked with their genitals exposed, he called “a simple, primitive gesture.” The same goes for the furniture that Rick Owens has been producing since 2005.
